Anthropic Backers Eye Massive Windfall Ahead
Early investors in the AI giant are holding stakes worth billions at the latest private valuation, with potential gains set to double upon a public listing.

The artificial intelligence landscape is bracing for a seismic shift as Anthropic prepares for a public listing later this year. The company is expected to hit the stock market with a valuation reaching as high as two trillion dollars, a figure that promises to be a historic windfall for both early-stage and later-stage investors who backed the laboratory during its formative years.
Even before the official IPO, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early backers are substantial. At the company’s most recent private market valuation of 965 billion dollars, many of these investors already hold positions worth billions of dollars. According to data cited by Bloomberg, the financial positions of several prominent backers illustrate the sheer scale of the gains accrued during the AI boom.
One of the most notable figures in this group is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive officer of Google. Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A funding round in 2021, a time when the startup was valued at just 461 million dollars according to PitchBook data. His early commitment has paid off exponentially, with Schmidt now owning approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly 10 billion dollars.
Later-stage investors have also seen their fortunes swell dramatically. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a six billion dollar check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at 183 billion dollars. That massive late-stage bet has grown to a value of 17 billion dollars and has the potential to double again once the IPO is completed, securing Iconiq a significant return on its investment.
Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D funding round, has invested more than one billion dollars in the company over time. This sustained commitment has resulted in a stake now valued at 14 billion dollars, reflecting the rapid appreciation of the AI lab’s equity. The firm’s position highlights the continued confidence of major venture capital players in Anthropic’s trajectory.
Sequoia, the renowned venture capital firm, entered the scene later in the company’s growth cycle. The firm first backed the AI lab earlier this year, when Anthropic was already valued at 380 billion dollars. Sequoia’s three billion dollar investment secured it about one percent ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment in a relatively short period.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The firm invested 35 million dollars in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round and has since funneled an additional 400 million dollars into the company. This cumulative investment has resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars today. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the firm’s Anthropic stake remains a key asset.
Perhaps the most dramatic increase in value is seen at Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. Spark Capital invested 75 million dollars in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at five billion dollars. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, reaching a value of seven billion dollars. This massive appreciation underscores the potential for early, small-ticket investments to transform into multi-billion dollar holdings as the AI sector matures.
